Freedom Voices publishes works that speak to or from communities on the margins. Founded in 1989 in San Francisco's Tenderloin District. In 1997 FV formally joined forces with the TallMountain Circle (founded in 1994) which produces, promotes and distributes Mary TallMountain's literary works. In 1999 Freedom Voices accquired New Earth Press and broadened its focus to include Latin American issues.
Freedom Voices and the TallMountain Circle are projects of the Tenderloin Reflection and Education Center (TREC), a community based learning and resource center located in San Francisco's low income Tenderloin district. TREC organizes workshops, performances and educational events with people excluded from mainstream cultural venues for economic, ethnic or political reasons.
