Caroline Heller is on the faculty of the College of Education and English Department at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has taught at several grade levels and was a writer for the Teaching Tolerance Project of the Southern Law Poverty Center. Her research focuses on how people, particularly the elderly and poor, utilize literacy to make sense of their lives, and on how the social workings of out-of-school learning settings can broaden and inform conceptions of teaching and learning in schools. Her book on Tenderloin Women Writers, Until We Are Strong Together, was published by Teachers College Press, Columbia University in 1997.
